Listen to Corinne L. Mason and their research partner Leah Hamilton talk about the impacts of Alberta’s anti-2SLGBTQIA+ legislation on CBC Radio's Day 6.
In finding that the posts were defamatory, the court accepted expert evidence from Dr. Corinne Mason, a professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Dr. Mason explained that… allegations of 'groomer' and 'grooming' appear in hateful rhetoric to imply the LGBTQ+ people, or those perceived to be sexually or gender diverse, are pedophiles. There was no evidence that any of the plaintiffs have ever engaged in such misconduct.
“When I transitioned, I lost my sense of safety,” said Platt. “People have this idea that people transition to win, but people transition to be happy.”
In Alberta, Queer Families Are ‘Not OK’
One of the panelists, Eb Campbell, said they don’t see the point in having legislation which restricts transgender participation in sports because there are not many trans athletes to begin with. “There’s just not enough of us,” Campbell said. “Especially when you get into trans people in sports, we’re such a small percentage of these people. You’re legislating things that aren’t a problem.”
Researching Researchers: Gloria Perez-Rivera
“Our research, while preliminary, demonstrates that harmful effects are already taking shape in Alberta, and parents in 2SLGBTQIA+ families are terrified of what is coming with the legislation dropping soon.”
